This is when one is motivated by internal factors such as doing something for the fun of it or because one feels it is the right thing to do.

Extrinsic Motivation



This is when one is motivated by external factors such as
tangible rewards or pressure.

How Intrinsic Motivation Is Attained
• Emerges spontaneously out of people’s psychological
needs for autonomy, competence and relatedness.
• If it is nurtured it contributes to the developing of better conceptual understanding, creativity, persistence and
subjective well-being.

Outline the relationship between intrinsic motivation
and the quality of work produced. Provide an
example that illustrates this relationship.
• This motivation comes from inside a person and produces the drive of the person.
• People produce a better quality of work when they are inspired. • They act out of interest because of psychological needs. • Imagine that you were conducting a research study on the motivation for high school students to participate in sports. The joined because they enjoy playing sports, they think sports are cool or because they love the challenge they get from

participating in sports. The reasons that the seventy percent gave are examples of intrinsic motivation.

Conclusion
Extrinsic motivation occurs when we are motivated to perform a behavior or engage in an activity to earn a reward or avoid punishment.
Intrinsic motivation involves engaging in behavior because it is personally rewarding; essentially, performing an activity for its own sake rather than the desire for some external reward. • Unexpected external rewards typically do not decrease intrinsic motivation. • Praise can help increase internal motivation.

• Intrinsic motivation will decrease, however, when external rewards are given for completing a particular task or only doing minimal work.
• Extrinsic motivation can help in some cases.
