Introduction

Among university students the use of smartphones is becoming more and more common. According to The Telegraph (2014) new research has found that people are spending more time using their smartphones for surfing the web, checking social networks or playing games than making phone calls. “Smartphones are now being used like a digital ‘Swiss Army Knife’, replacing possessions like watches, cameras, books and even laptops”, said David Johnson, general manager of devices for O2 in the UK. The objective of this report is to find out more about the use of smartphones among university students.

Method

A questionnaire (Appendix) was conducted among 32 overseas students from three classes who are currently studying English for Academic Purposes at the Centre for English Teaching at The University of Sydney. The total number of participants (n=32) comprised 21 male and 11 female students within the age range of 18 to over 32. The questionnaire consisted of 6 questions as well as gender and age group section. The questions included a yes/no type question, two multiples choices question, two short answer questions and an ordinal rank order question.

Results

Graph 1 shows that everybody who answered the questionnaire has a smartphone.

Graph 2 illustrates about how much time students spend on the smartphone each day. Fewer students spend less than one hour on it (6%) and a few more spend from 1 to 2 hours (16%). On the other hand, a large percentage of students spend about 3 – 5 hours (44%) and more than 5 hours (34%) using their smartphones.

The most useful apps at the smartphone used by students are illustrated in Graph 3 bellow. Social network (42%), searching websites apps were (35%), education apps (10%), games apps (10%) and none (3%).

Graph 4 describes the acceptance of the use of smartphones during class. The answer `yes` was chosen by almost 62% representing 20 of 32 students that were interviewed and the justification is that the smartphones are useful for translating. The other 38% corresponds to 12 students interviewed who chose `no` and justified that using it during class can disturb classmates.

Graph 5 gives information about how many students are really satisfied with their smartphone services inside the university on a scale of 1 to 5. According to the poll nobody answered that are very unsatisfied, about 28% said that they are unsatisfied, 25% feel neutral about it and 16% and 31% are very satisfied and satisfied respectively.

The way students feel if they spent one day without using their smartphones is detailed in Graph 6 bellow. The majority (38%) answered that they would feel anxious against just one person (3%) who would feel relieved. Some would be distressed (34%), a few indifferent (6%) and some fine (19%).

Discussion

These results show that a hundred percent (100 %) of CET students interviewed uses Smartphone.
