Chapter 1
Introduction

Most colleges and universities are faced with challenge and stability during college in time with the student’s selection of course. This phenomenon seems global throughout the educational institution in the tertiary level. Students flock to courses which seemingly interest them but tend to shift to other courses at other times. It is true that with the exemption of certain schools and certain courses, freshmen and sophomores usually take general introductory courses, while junior and seniors are concentrating in the academic subjects. But what causes the shifting from one course to another would obviously mean that several failures may be responsible for a person’s choice. In the Philippines, College students are not exempted from this tendency. It is commonly experienced these days that a good number of freshmen students shift from one course to another every semester. It has always been a burden on the part of the student’s immediate superior who approved the shifting of courses. In fact, the incidence of indecision in occupational choice among college students has become a burden to some faculty members in college level, since shifting is a product of irrational decision which notably interferes with the educational growth of the students. The Researchers come up with this study to determine why students shift from one course to Diploma on Hotel and Restaurant Management in the Cavite State University.

Statement of the Problem
This study entitled “Perception of Selected Students of Cavite State Universitiy – Main Campus in Shifting under Diploma in Hotel and Restaurant Management program A.Y 2015 – 2016” attempts to provide answers to the following questions: 1. What is the socio-demographic profile of selected students of CVSU in terms of? a) Age

b) Gender
c) Parents occupation
2 What are the factors that pressure the college students to shift course? 3. What are the advantages and disadvantages of shifting of courses as perceived by the students?

Objectives of the Study
The overall aim of the study is to collect valid and reliable information to DHRM students. Within this broad theme, the research had a number of specific objectives: 1. To distinguish the socio-demographic profile of the selected students of CVSU in terms of: a) Age

b) Gender
c) Parents occupation
2. To determine students reasons for changing from one course to another. 3. To know the advantages & disadvantages of shifting of courses as perceived by the students

Significance of the Study
This study entitled “Perception of Selected Students of Cavite State Universitiy – Main Campus in Shifting under Diploma in Hotel and Restaurant Management program A.Y 2015 – 2016” will evaluate the decision making process in the choices of courses among shifters at the College of Education. The results will be beneficial in the field of guidance and counselling for it will enhance the smooth educational process specifically to a) the teachers who directly get involved with the students; b) the students for the insights gained in relation to their intelligence in decision making; and c) the career guidance councillors who are directly in charge in accepting and advising students who shifts. Moreover, this study will help to reduce the shifters of the students of CVSU. Additionally this study will help guiding the students to a bright future.

Scopes and Limitations
This study focuses on the factors affecting the perception of the student’s decisions for shifting from one course to another. This is only limited for the shifter students from Cavite State University. This study will focus mainly on...
