THE EFFECTS OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY ON LIBRARY SERVICE AND THE NEED FOR LIBRARY PROFESSIONALS TO UPGRADE THEMSELVES TO MEET THE NEW CHANGE.

The services of a librarian are as important as that of a doctor, pilot, president, and many other vital professions. Each of these professions are unique and essential in their respective fields. As a librarian, it is a joy to assist a patron to locate the right information she or her is looking for. It is amazing how people appreciate us after we have successfully helped them through their research. The reward comes in many forms and has immense value to us as librarians. However, librarians cannot dutifully assist library users without the required knowledge and skill. Acquiring the qualities and tools of a competent librarian require hard work, time, and support. The Carnegie Corporation is a leader in helping less privileged countries and individuals and I am honoured to apply for the MIT programme. The Carnegie Corporation whose mission is to “promote the advancement and diffusion of knowledge and understanding” which truly affirms their humanitarian duties and as an Educational Foundation has by far proved nothing less than doing “ Real and Permanent Good in this world” (http://carnegie.org/about-us/mission-and-vision/). The Balme library of the University of Ghana received a grant from the Carnegie Corporation in 2011 to set up complete state of the art research centres for faculty members, postgraduate and undergraduate students of the university. These facilities have greatly impacted the academic work of both students and faculty at the University. It has helped the Balme library reclaim its status as the main library of the University of Ghana. These facilities have fully installed wireless connectivity, discussion rooms, study labs, coffee lounge, networked printers, scanners, photo copiers and many others which attract most students and faculty members to the Balme library.
