1.1 Background to the Study:
One of the most important services that must be delivered by any tertiary institution is the provision of affordable hostel accommodation and this is the responsibility of the Student Affairs Department in the University. This is a duty of an outstanding importance especially to the new students who, in most cases, are complete ‘strangers’ in the environment. Accommodation is one of the basic needs of a student in tertiary institutions according to Emmanuel Soya (1994). Therefore, a student in a tertiary institution must be provided with accommodation within the school to enhance his learning. Today in our universities, hostels are not even constructed for students more or less adequately furnished. Hostel accommodations in Nigerian Universities have created a lot of discussions in the field of education. The extent to which hostels accommodation have been scarce, has affected students in different areas of learning to the extent of others even losing their lives. In this study, we will try to see how this problem of inadequate hostel accommodation has socially and security wise affected the students of Adamawa State University as a case study. The Federal Government of Nigeria recently directed Heads of Tertiary Educational Institutions (TEIs) in the country to hand over hostels in campuses to private managers and also encourage private investors to build hostels for students. 1.2 Statement of Problem:
Housing being one of the basic human needs is an aspect of development economics and therefore of topical interest to all sectors of all societies. Although it is regarded as an aspect of pupil personnel management in education and thus not directly in the primary assignments of educational administrators with respect to instruction. It is basically true that academic performance must necessarily be influenced by the quality and quantity of the residential accommodation (an aspect of the learning environment) of students. The report on Hostel Accommodation in Nigeria and Adamawa State University to be specific has created a lot of concerns and arguments which motivates me to make research on the issue. Based on my personal research conducted, some students pointed out some certain constraints facing students in universities concerning hostel accommodation in Adamawa State University, Mubi. Some of these constraints are: inadequate bed space, inadequate rooms and structures, inadequate lockers, inadequate toilets among others. This is why this research attempts to explore ways these problems can be tackled in Adamawa State University and other Institutions. 1.3 Objectives of the Study:
The main objective of this study is to assess the security and social impact of inadequate hostel accommodation in Adamawa State University, Mubi. Hence, using the following specific objectives; a. To find out the cause of inadequate hostel accommodation in Adamawa State University, Mubi. b. To find out the extent to which the schools management prioritize accommodations. c. To examine the conditions of students in and Adamawa State University in relation to inadequate hostel accommodation. d. To find out how inadequate hostel accommodation affects students performance. 1.4 Significance of the Study:
The outcome of this research will assist the school management under study to carefully view and consider how students are suffering even to the extent to some students falling victims of natural phenomena, either socially or insecurity. Others are been murdered as they reside outside the campus, this is as a result of inadequate hostel accommodation within the school premises. This research will communicate to student staying outside campus to know the risk they are involved in as a result of insecurity outside most especially with the enemies of education rooming everywhere. Lastly, it would serve as fundamental aid to students and...
