College Stress

College is a very big transition for every person who’ll enter it. It brings those individuals to a whole different stage in his or her lives. It brings them closer to adulthood. It either is a welcomed change or a dreaded change. The teaching styles, classes, crowds, and campuses are very much different from the ones people encounter in high school. Some people adjust well right away, some take a slower in adjusting, and some don’t get to adjust all too well at all. There is a percentage of students who were not able to cope up with college; therefore, making them dropouts. There are many reasons as to why people dropout. There are some reasons that leave the students the choice to do so and, some force the students to be dropouts.

I will talk about the correlation of emotional stress, academic stress, students, and dropout rates. College is an important stage in an individual’s life. It is the springboard, which launches teenagers to adulthood and the work world. The college experience is totally different and sometimes proven to be challenging to some individuals. Sometimes, the stresses experienced by college students are too much to handle for their capacity of handling stress.

Students stressing over a lot of issues may lead to depression. They get to experience unhealthy levels of stress. In Lisa Watson’s article “Depression Impacts College Dropout Rates” there was a mental health poll showing the effects of stress and depression amongst students. According to a 2009 MTVu/Associated Mental Health Poll:* Over 85% reported feeling stressed on a daily basis. Most of the stress was related to school work, worrying about their GPA, and financial problems. One out of 10 students polled showed signs of serious depression. 17% of students overall report that their friends have talked about wanting to end their lives. 10% say a friend has made a suicide attempt. 7% of students have seriously thought about ending...
