Atkinson’s Achievement Motivation Theory

John Atkinson’s achievement motivation theory is in essence, the closest theory that relates to my workplace experiences. I have always been a person with a high achievement challenge level. Every day I strive to attain a level of success that so many have seemed to regard as “the good life.” Atkinson theorized that people like me with a high need for higher achievement anticipate success a lot more that failure. Atkinson also theorized that low achievement challenge level people strive for high expectations in order to place blame on something, once their goals aren’t met. Listed below are just a few examples of how Atkinson’s achievement motivation theory has affected my everyday life.
There was a particular incident that I can remember that occurred back in October of 2007. I had been proving myself to my boss for the last year, doing whatever it took to get noticed. When I had started the job, I had made me a two-year plan. I would be in a stable position, so that I could buy me a house as soon as possible. I knew that in order to advance, I would have to get up extra early and rewrite the book on initiative. Failure was not an option! I had to be there an hour early and leave two hours later. I studied up on all procedural manuals, and after a year on the job, I was replacing the supervisor when she couldn’t make it in.
I was really on top of my game. I had the schedule down and was even able to expand my responsibilities to include a few more tasks. All of this, just to show my boss that I was ready to excel at this profession. I kept my eye on that promotion for months. Every chance I got I did a little more than what was expected.
